Character Design

I have spent alot of time over the past few months meeting and talking to transgender people, focusing mostly on FTM (female to males). This page is here to show those people and there stories with some simple charecter images. From this i hope to be able to find a story to tell as well as finding a charecter for my film.

phalloplasty

Whats that?

There are four different techniques for phalloplasty. All of the techniques involve taking a graft of tissue from a donor site and extending the urethra.

Surgery for biological males is simpler than for female-to-male transgender patients, because the urethra requires less lengthening. The urethra of a trans man ends near the vaginal opening and has to be lengthened considerably. The lengthening of the urethra is when most complications occur.

With all types of phalloplasty in trans men, scrotoplasty can be performed using the labia majora (vulva) to form a scrotum where prosthetic testicles can be inserted. Ifvaginectomy, hysterectomy and/or oophorectomy have not been performed, they can be done at the same time.

Unlike metoidioplasty, phalloplasty requires an implanted erectile prosthesis to achieve an erection. This is usually done in a separate surgery to allow time for healing. There are several types of erectile prostheses, including malleable rod-like medical devices that allow the

neo-penis to either stand up or hang down. Penile implants require a neophallus of appropriate length and volume in order to be a safe option. The long term success rates of implants in constructed penises are less than the success rates of reconstruction in cis men. Good sensation in the reconstructed penis can help reduce the risk of the implant eventually eroding through the skin.

Phalloplasty is the construction or reconstruction of a penis, or the artificial modification of the penis by surgery. Often, but not always, seen as simply a cosmetic procedure, this surgery can help transgender men be comfortable in their own bodies. The term phalloplasty is also occasionally used to refer to penis enlargement.

Note On Terminology: Penile implants are also known as penile prosthetics. However a penis “prosthetic” or “prosthesis” commonly refers to a non-surgical “packer” — a polymer or silicone penis that’s worn in a harness or affixed with medical adhesive. Similarly, “erectile device,” which is also sometimes used interchangeably with “penile implant,” can refer to external devices that assist with erections via vacuum pressure, vascular constriction, nerve stimulation, stretching.

You dont not need to have phalloplasty to have a penis, nor do you need a penis to be a man.

Just a Quick note whilst on topic!!!!

Adam has had phalloplasty surgury and kept a live blog along side it talking about his experence thoughout which has been amazingly interesting to read and keep up with over the past year

The image to the right has been taken from adams blog

"I’m now 1 whole year post op from my first stage of forearm phalloplasty with Mr Christopher and the London team (and 5 and half months post stage 2). Really happy with how things have turned out! I’ve been very fortunate to not have any extreme complications that required any extra surgeries. Very excited for my 3rd and final stage at the end of this month!"

Above are some post from Adam's blog which is linked above. Adam is a very brave man and has completley changed everything about himself in the space of 3 years. Adam's speaks about himself and his journey in stages and though he talks about his expenses its still slightly impersonal. But i'm hoping thats a wall that can be broken down over time.
